Another Genetic Quirk of the Solomon Islands: Blond Hair
Monday 28th of May 2012 03:21:06 AM
Posted by admin / Under Hair
In the Solomon Islands, about 10 percent of the dark-skinned indigenous people have strikingly blond hair. Some islanders theorize that the coloring could be a result of excess sun exposure, or a diet rich in fish. Another explanation is that the blondness was inherited from distant ancestors European traders and explorers who came to the islands. But thats not the case, researchers now report. The gene variant responsible for blond hair in the islanders is distinctly different from the gene that causes blond hair in Europeans. For me it breaks down any kind of simple notions you might have...

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz's new hairstyle

Debbie Wasserman Schultz's hairstyle may not be the most important topic being discussed in the country right now, but many think it's a conversation worth having. Even Democrats I know have snickered to me, "When is she going to do something with that hair?" On Twitter, one can follow the snarky remarks made by DWSHair, a Twitter persona allegedly created by Wasserman Schultz's actual hair. Not being an expert on hairdos myself, I consulted with BPR's crack advisory board of celebrity hairstylists to find poor Debbie a new do. Please vote for your favorite new hairstyle in the comments section...

Huntsman, the former governor of Utah, discussed his grooming habits in an interview with Chris Moody of Yahoo! News. Asked what products he uses for his hair, Huntsman responded that his wife tells him what to do in this regard, explaining: I wish I could tell you. She has these little squirt bottles. Huntsman added: But no dye. And not much in the way of artificiality. |

Since there was such an interest in model's teeth, I thought I would do an overview of model's hair. Ever notice that the hair in fashion magazines never resembles what you actually see in reality? Imagine what it takes to maintain these hairstyles for anything except a photo shoot with a stylist off-camera.
Star Trek - Next Generation Scene

I am looking for a scene in one of the Star Trek (Next Generation) episodes. The scene has members of the crew going to the Doctor's (I think - maybe another character) room to look for a strand of hair to use to replicate her DNA. She is not on the ship and something has happened to the transporter. I can't remember all the details. I teach forensic science and want to use this for my class. If you know which episode, please let me know. Thanks for any help.

Surgeon General Regina Benjamin says a hairdo may deter exercise. Is she right?

Dr. Regina Benjamin, surgeon general of the United States, is warning American women of an impediment to a healthy, active life: their hairstyles. Benjamin said that the expensive products and time-consuming procedures that some women, especially African American women, invest in to straighten and control their tight curls may deter them from working out. After all, just a little moisture could undo the hairdo that was the result of a lot of time and money. (SNIP) The story pointed out some interesting research from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center that found about a third of black women surveyed said they...

Damn, am I fine lookin' or what?!!! Just days after he was indicted on federal charges of using illegal campaign donations to conceal his mistress from voters, the U.S. Marshals Service on Wednesday released the mugshots of former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C). Edwards, who was the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The six-count indictment triggered immediate criticism from a range of campaign finance and legal experts, who said the governments case is unprecedented and appears weak. They questioned whether it would survive the fierce defense being mounted by Edwardss lawyers, who contend that...

Costly Hairstyle Is a Beauty Trend That Draws Thieves Notice (Hair Extension Theft)

The thieves pulled the iron bars out of the windows, outsmarted the motion detector that would have triggered a burglar alarm and did not give the safe or cash register a second look. Instead they went straight for what was most valuable: human hair. By the time the bandits at the My Trendy Place salon in Houston were finished, they had stolen $150,000 worth of the shops most prized type, used for silky extensions. The break-in was part of a recent trend of thefts, some involving violence, of a seemingly plentiful material. During the past two months alone, robbers in...
'Earth Day co-founder killed, composted girlfriend'

That's the hilarious (and accurate) headline on a story today from MSNBC, of all places. And it's true. For those who don't remember: Ira Einhorn was on stage hosting the first Earth Day event at the Fairmount Park in Philadelphia on April 22, 1970. Seven years later, police raided his closet and found the "composted" body of his ex-girlfriend inside a trunk. A self-proclaimed environmental activist, Einhorn made a name for himself among ecological groups during the 1960s and '70s by taking on the role of a tie-dye-wearing ecological guru and Philadelphia's head hippie. With his long beard and gap-toothed...
With more white parents adopting black children, hair care for them is a needed lesson

In the African-American community, the significance of hair cannot be underestimated, a source of either self-esteem or self-doubt. So for white parents of black children, making sure their youngsters are well-coiffed is as much a priority as good nutrition and potty training. This reality came into focus recently at a sold-out workshop, "Caring for Afro-textured Hair and Skin," at the Cradle, an Evanston-based adoption agency. "People are judged by the way they look," said Julien Drouet, a white father of Lily, 3, and 10-month-old Victor, whom he adopted with his partner, Brandon Walt. "I don't agree, but if we want...

Did Obama dye his gray hair away?Photos of President Obama released this week are prompting a feverish round of "does he or doesn't he" speculation about whether our commander in chief dyed his hair. The visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao has provided the nation's pundits and politicians with plenty of serious talking points. From the potential threat posed by China's increasingly sophisticated military to the impact that Beijing's monetary policies have on the U.S. economy, there is no shortage of weighty issues. So it may be no surprise that, after Wednesday's White House dinner for Hu, the question spiking...

German scientists have successfully grown hair follicles from stem cells, and claim it could translate into a cure for baldness in the next five years, BioScholar.com reported. The stem cells used in the study at Berlins Technical University were taken from animals, but researchers said they hope to use human stem cells within a year. Professor Roland Lauster said the study could result in a baldness treatment for as much as 80 percent of people who suffer from hair loss. Since 1950 the number of new chemicals used in cosmetics has risen 500fold, and so has the need for animals...
Why Do Koreans Own The Black Beauty Supply Business?

Its odd but no so odd at the same time. By now, many people expect to walk into a beauty supply store and see a Korean store owner manning the register. Whether youre in the suburbs of Houston or on MLK Blvd in Anytown, USA, you know what to expect. And yet, walking down a street in a Black neighborhood with Black residents and Black customers buzzing about the retail shops, that image of the few Koreans in the neighborhood only existing behind the cash register of liquor, beauty supply and other retail shops is still perplexing.

Smearing Republican Women

In 1992, the feminists in the media rejoiced at what they called The Year of the Woman, when ten Democratic women (and one Republican) were running for the Senate in the aftermath of Anita Hills unproven sexual-harassment allegations against Clarence Thomas. Just two years before, seven Republican women (and two Democrats) ran. But the media yawned. In 1992, the evening newscasts aired 29 stories exclusively devoted to women Senate candidates. In 1990, there was one...on election night. In 1992, the morning shows interviewed women Senate candidates on 26 occasions. In 1990, there were zero interviews. This was all about the...

Left wing Media boobs are pushing their hypocritical agenda again. This time they are busy criticizing Carly Fiorina for her joke about Barbara Boxer's hair - the same media that recently spent days mocking Sarah Palin about whether she had a breast enlargement. Are both an example of left-wing media bias gotcha journalism targeting conservatives? In a "Girls will be girls, rivals will be rivals" moment, Carly Fiorina zinged Barbara Boxer's hair - it was caught on mike. No doubt Barbara Boxer is seething but the Boxer team is not demanding an apology. It happened when the California Republican Senate...
Prehistoric mammal hair found in Cretaceous amber

Palaeontologists have discovered two mammal hairs encased in 100 million-year-old amber. While older 2D fossilised hairs are known, those preserved in the amber are the oldest 3D specimens known. The hairs, found alongside a fly pupa in amber uncovered in southwest France, are remarkably similar to hair found on modern mammals. That implies that the shape and structure of mammal hair has remained unchanged over a vast period of time.

Former Hewlett-Packard executive Carly Fiorina, who won the California GOP Senate primary Tuesday, said Sunday she regretted her off-the-cuff remarks about the hairstyle worn by her opponent, Sen. Barbara Boxer. "I regret this whole situation. I gave people the opportunity to talk about something petty and superficial," she told Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday." "This is a very serious election year about serious issues." The Republican candidate didn't apologize for the remark, captured off the air during a television interview and posted on YouTube, in which she disparaged her opponents hairstyle as outdated. Mrs. Fiorina said the contest with...

Political novices generally make poor candidates for federal office. It is not that they are dumb, it is that they are not used to the 24/7 news-cycle. Think of H. Ross Perots unsteady campaign. Furthermore, novices do not understand that a media that loved them when they were running HP, will not love them when they are a Republican nominee for the Senate. Carly Fiorina is an impressive woman. She had to be in order to reach the top of a tech giant in the Silicon Valley, but she did not understand that the media would be out to get...
